Croatian for Beginners

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the Croatian language and culture. Through situational and culturally themed texts and a variety of supplemental materials and tools, students will develop essential communication skills and foundational grammar.

This course is part of a multi-level series that continues in Fall 2026, advancing to the next level and using the same textbooks for approximately two years.

Required materials, purchased separately, include the textbook and workbook Razgovarajte s nama (A1–A2 levels).

Croatian A1

This course continues the exploration of Croatian language and culture while further developing foundational A1-level skills. It emphasizes expanding proficiency in the present tense and strengthening understanding of key grammatical cases, particularly the accusative and locative, through thematic content on clothing, food and drink, and places of residence.

Croatian A2

This course builds on prior study of Croatian language and culture, advancing students’ proficiency at the A2 level. It focuses on expanding command of the present and past tenses while deepening understanding of key grammatical cases, including the dative, instrumental, and genitive. Students actively develop their reading and writing skills through regular weekly reports and other assignments.

A Whimsical Journey Through Croatia is more than just a reading experience—it’s an interactive exploration of Croatia’s natural wonders, cultural treasure, and culinary delights. Guided by selected poems from my children’s poetry book Šaljivo putovanje Hrvatskom (A Whimsical Journey Through Croatia), we travel the country engaging with its unique charm at every step.

Each week, I share short poems and dialogues that serve as fun, accessible entry points into the Croatian language. Together, we practice pronunciation, expand vocabulary, and deepen our understanding of the Croatian cases. The poems and dialogues are written in Croatian (with English translations provided), while the accompanying background texts about Croatian attractions are presented in English.

“Croatian ABCs”​

September 6 - October 25

This course is structured alphabetically, following the Croatian abeceda (alphabet). Each letter serves as a gateway to a natural, cultural, or culinary element of Croatia, explored through short texts, readings, and interactive activities in Croatian. 

Students will practice pronunciation—especially the unique Croatian characters—and dive into key grammar topics, such as grammatical gender, numbers, verb categories in the present tense, and both descriptive and possessive adjectives. Along the way, we’ll build vocabulary and deepen our understanding of the Croatian language and the vibrant heritage it reflects.
